What is Bipolar Disorder?

Bipolar disorder is a condition characterized by cycling through defined periods of depression and elevated mood. It typically involves three states: mania (high state), depression (low state), and a well state where individuals feel normal and function well. The mood swings in bipolar disorder are more extreme than the typical emotional ups and downs of everyday life. Everyone has their ups and downs in their moods, but this is decidedly different in it’s intensity.

Due to the different phases of bipolar disorder, the signs and symptoms can vary.

Manic Phase

Accompanying symptoms of a manic episode, typically lasting one week, include:

  • Exaggerated self-esteem or grandiosity

  • Decreased need for sleep and excessive energy

  • Increased talkativeness

  • Racing thoughts and easily distracted

  • Risky behavior or poor judgment

Depressive Phase

During the depressive phase, lasting at least two weeks, a person may experience:

  • Depressed mood

  • Loss of interest in activities

  • Sleep disturbances

  • Apathy or agitation

  • Loss of energy

  • Feelings of worthlessness and guilt

  • Suicidal thoughts

Mixed Episodes

Mixed episodes involve simultaneous manic and depressive symptoms, such as rapid thoughts and speech alongside anxiety and suicidal thoughts. These episodes are challenging to diagnose.

Treatment with Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy

Ketamine-assisted therapy (KAT) for bipolar disorder is emerging as a promising therapeutic approach, with research showing benefit in reducing the symptoms of in the depressive phase.

Studies have shown that ketamine-assisted therapy can provide rapid and significant relief from depressive symptoms in patients with bipolar disorder. This is particularly valuable for those with treatment-resistant depression who have not responded to conventional therapies. Patients often report a marked improvement in mood, reduced suicidal ideation, and enhanced ability to engage in daily activities shortly after treatment.
