What is Post Traumatic Stress Disorder?
Posttraumatic Stress Disorder is an emotional response to terrifying or dangerous experiences that involve serious harm or threat. While it's a post traumatic stress is a natural reaction to such events, for some, the impact lingers long after the danger has passed, and severely affects their daily life.
Signs & Symptoms
PTSD typically surfaces within three months of the traumatic event, but symptoms can also appear years later. Common symptoms include:
Re-experiencing the Trauma: Repeatedly reliving the event through flashbacks or nightmares.
Disturbing Memories: Unwanted, intrusive thoughts about the trauma.
Hyperarousal: Intense distress when reminded of the event, and feeling on edge.
Avoidance: Steering clear of reminders, places, activities, or people connected to the trauma.
Emotional Numbness: Losing interest in enjoyable activities, feeling disconnected from others, and trouble experiencing pleasure.
Cognitive and Emotional Difficulties: Constant worry, difficulty concentrating, and quick to anger.
Sleep Problems: Trouble falling or staying asleep.
Physical Symptoms: Sudden dizziness, fast heartbeat, shortness of breath, and fear of dying.
Complex PTSD (C-PTSD) is a severe form of PTSD that results from prolonged or repeated trauma, such as ongoing abuse or captivity. Unlike standard PTSD, which may arise from a single traumatic event, C-PTSD reflects the deep and lasting impact of chronic exposure to trauma. Individuals with C-PTSD often struggle with intense emotions, including uncontrollable anger and a pervasive sense of emptiness or worthlessness. They may feel fundamentally different from others, leading to isolation and difficulty in maintaining relationships.
Additional symptoms include dissociation, such as feeling detached from oneself (depersonalization) or from reality (derealization), and physical complaints like headaches, dizziness, and chest pains. Suicidal thoughts may also be a regular part of their experience.
