What is Obsessive Compulsive Disorder?

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is an anxiety disorder where individuals experience persistent, intrusive thoughts (obsessions) and feel compelled to perform certain rituals (compulsions) to alleviate their distress. Though people with OCD may recognize that their obsessions are irrational, they often find it difficult to control or ignore them.

Obsessions:

  • Intrusive, repetitive thoughts, urges, or images

  • Common obsessions include:

    • Fear of contamination (dirt, germs, diseases)

    • Repeated doubts (e.g., whether the stove is turned off)

    • Need for exactness and order

    • Preoccupation with religious or blasphemous thoughts

    • Fear of harming oneself or others

Compulsions:

  • Rituals performed to reduce or suppress obsessions

  • Common compulsions include:

    • Excessive cleaning/washing

    • Repeated checking (e.g., paperwork for mistakes)

    • Ordering/arranging items

    • Mental rituals such as praying, counting, or repeating words

OCD symptoms are time-consuming and cause significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning. People with OCD may often miss work or school due to their compulsions and find it difficult to engage in many other aspects of life.

Treatment with Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy

Ketamine-assisted therapy offers promising benefits for those struggling with OCD. Unlike traditional treatments, which can take weeks or months to show results, ketamine often provides significant relief within hours to days. This rapid improvement can be especially valuable for individuals who haven't found success with standard therapies.

In addition to quickly reducing OCD symptoms, ketamine therapy also helps lower the anxiety that accompanies the disorder, leading to better overall functioning and a more manageable daily life. This makes it a hopeful option for those who have struggled with treatment-resistant OCD and are seeking a new path forward.
