Depression Treatment
Psychedelic Assisted Therapy
What is Depression?
Depression is more than just feeling down or unhappy; it's a complex mood disorder influenced by genetics, personality, stress, and brain chemistry. And unlike some of the ups and downs of everyday life, it's not something one can simply "get over."
There are some unique types of depression that develop under unique circumstances, such as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), which is affected by seasonal changes and Postpartum Depression which affects up to 10% of women after childbirth.
Depression is diagnosed more commonly in women, and often linked to hormonal changes. It is also missed or misdiagnosed in men due to how it can look very different for them. Men will often appear more irritable and angry when depressed, so it doesn’t look typical to our cultural understanding of depression
In terms of age related consideration, it’s important to note that depression can often be overlooked in older adults, as it may be misconstrued as a general malaise with life and slowing down in older age vs a serious mental health concern.
Signs & Symptoms:
Persistent sadness lasting most of the day for over two weeks.
Impaired performance in daily activities.
Changes in appetite, weight, and sleep patterns.
Loss of interest in activities, withdrawal, feelings of hopelessness, irritability, fatigue, concentration issues, crying, suicidal thoughts, and possible hallucinations or delusions.
Depression is a serious condition that requires attention and care.
Treatment with Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy
There is an growing body of evidence that Ketamine-assisted therapy (KAT) for depressionis is an effective therapeutic approach.
Clinical studies have demonstrated promise in reducing symptoms rapidly, sometimes within hours of administration, and when combined with therapy, that only compounds the effects. It is also particularly effective for those with treatment-resistant depression who have not found relief from other treatments.
Another part is that ketamine-assisted therapy has shown to be effective in reducing suicidal ideation and related symptoms.
